Are you over 40? Would you like to have an attractive, toned
body? How would you like to lose weight while doing relaxing exercises?
Then yoga is for you.
Yoga does not only give you greater
flexibility and improves the mobility of your joints- particularly
important for the age group over 40 when bodies become tighter and
tense. It has many more benefits:
Yoga will improve your posture.
You'll automatically be more attractive. Others will unconsciously see
you as confident and capable because your hold your body upright and you
are standing tall. The exercises work out muscles you normally not use
that much so you'll get an overall toned body. All these exercises use
only your own body weight, so you do not need any equipment making them
perfect for a "workout at home".
Some yoga exercises will get your
heart rate up quickly, so you'll burn fat and lose weight. Important:
You should not put pressure on yourself doing them. It's meant to be a
stress-releasing, relaxing experience. You'll learn to exercise while
you relax yourself and enjoy your body.
If you need to compensate
for a desk-bound job, these exercises will be of great relief. They
strengthen your back muscles too, helping prevent back pain and
headaches. When you have a break from work, yoga exercises relax and
energize you quickly. You'll learn to breathe consciously what helps
greatly in stressful situations.
A good exercise program should
include 3 components: strength training, cardiovascular training and
flexibility training. Yoga provides all 3 of them while giving you a
stress-releasing relaxing experience. Especially over 40 we tend to lose
flexibility and our bodies start to get tighter. Yoga exercises assist
you in balancing the effects of being over 40 while helping you to lose
weight permanently.
Yoga has been widely accepted for decades as a mind-body therapy
with many health benefits. Yet it remains doubtful whether it can aid
weight loss even though yoga tips for weight loss are commonly available
online. So does yoga help you lose weight?
One of the main
reasons for the skepticism is because many of us believed that to lose
weight, there must be vigorous activity involved. If you look at this
mind-body therapy from this angle, the answer to the question, does yoga
help you lose weight is obvious. Yet Geri Halliwell and Madonna
attributed their sexy body to yoga. So does yoga help you lose weight or
not?
In fact, practicing yoga helps you lose weight. It deals
with weight loss in a holistic way by working on the mental and physical
aspects of weight gain. In comparison, most weight loss solutions focus
mainly on diets and exercises only.
But how does yoga help you
lose weight? By practicing the right yoga style and poses, you will
start to burn body fat. You will also see an improvement in your fitness
level as well. If you are keen to tone specific area of your body, you
can do that with specific poses too as you are about to discover
shortly.
The other advantages of doing yoga regularly are that it
improves self-awareness and discipline. This allows you to be aware of
the habitual behaviors that bring about weight gain so that you can
replace them with healthy ones. With a discipline mind, you are not
likely to give in to the temptation of junk food or overeat. Instead,
you will focus on healthy living with the right diets and exercises.
So
which yoga style is good for weight loss? Vinyasa Yoga (Flow Yoga) is
the best. This yoga style involves synchronizing movements with breaths.
And within flow yoga, Ashtanga is the most effective yoga style for
weight loss. It is physically demanding and within weeks, you can expect
to lose fat, develop muscles and improve your fitness.
Since you
are keen to know does yoga help you lose weight, you will want to know
the beneficial poses for getting rid of the extra pounds. Regardless of
doing yoga at home or in the studio, here are 3 of the best yoga poses
for weight loss.
Sun Salutation
This is one of the
best yoga workouts for weight loss and a common pose among different
styles. Most yoga sessions begin with sun salutation as it warms you up,
increases flexibility and prepares you for the subsequent poses. Just
doing sun salutation uses up a lot of calories, warms the body and burns
fat.
Instructions:
Each cycle of sun salutation
comprises of 24 poses with the length of each inhalation or exhalation
dictating the transition time between the poses. For beginner, it is
wise to do a few minutes of breathing exercises before practicing sun
salutation as this can improve the coordination between breaths and
movements.
As you can easily find a lot of information on this pose online, I'll only provide the steps briefly to give you an idea.
Stand
in mountain pose on the mat. On the next inhalation, raise both arms
overhead till they are by the side of the ears. Exhale and bend forward
with head to the knees. Next, you will transit into the lung pose, plank
pose, and finally the stick pose. Move into the upward dog pose, and
then the downward dog before changing to the lunge pose again. At the
next exhalation, bring your head to the knees again. Inhale and extend
your arms over your head till they are by the side of the ears. Finally,
move back to the mountain pose. Repeat the steps with the other leg to
complete 1 cycle of sun salutation.
Bow Pose
How does
yoga help you lose weight with a static pose like this one? Don't be
misled into thinking that a pose without vigorous movement is useless
for our purpose. You will discover that as you lie on your stomach and
arc backward holding your ankles with your hands, you body starts to
generate a lot of heat and burn body fat in the process.
Instructions:
Use
a mat and lie on your stomach. As you exhale, bend your knees, reach
back with your hands and hold your ankles. With every inhalation, lifts
the heels away from the buttocks a little more. Your upper torso and
head should lift off the mat.
Pull your shoulders away from your
ears, graze forward and stay in the pose for about 30 seconds before
releasing your pose on an exhalation. Repeat this exercise 2 more times.
Forward Bend
This
pose loosens the spine, helps to regulate the kidneys and stretches the
hamstrings. But more importantly, it helps you lose weight and ease
pain and stress at the same time.
Similar to the bow pose, how
does yoga help you lose weight practicing a pose which barely uses up
calories? Other than improving your awareness, concentration and
discipline, forward bending tightened the stomach and burn fat with each
exhalation. You will find this exercise particularly useful for getting
rid of belly fat.
Instructions:
Sit on a mat and
straighten your legs. Bend at your waist with both hands reaching for
your feet. With each exhalation, ease a little deeper into the pose.
Does
yoga help you lose weight? It sure does. However, you should follow a
diet and workouts for weight loss plan with yoga as a component. This
can help you achieve your desired weight loss goal faster. You may want
to adopt a cross training approach to add variety to the plan. That way,
you are also more likely to stick to it.

Practicing Yoga comes with a lot of mental and physical benefits
which include safe weight loss. Obesity is as a result of consuming too
many calories without engaging in physical activities to burn off these
extra calories. Other than this, obesity can also be as a result of
severe underlying reasons. Some of these underlying causes include the
following:
• Liver problems
• Thyroid problems
• Low pH etc.
Yoga when practiced appropriately and under the
guidance of an experienced teacher will help address such issues and
help in the shedding of extra weight while at the same time restoring
lost health.
How Does Yoga Help In Safe Weight Loss?
Stimulating
the liver - we all know that the liver plays a number of important
roles in the human body like detoxifying and cleansing. Other than that,
the liver also purifies the blood and processes both the healthy and
unhealthy types of fat. This means that the healthier the liver is, the
more effective it becomes. It will effectively get rid of unhealthy fats
while promoting the growth of healthy fats and provide the body with
efficient energy through the storage of glucose and the production of
coenzyme Q10 which is known to strengthen the muscles.
It is by performing the following yoga postures that the liver gets to benefit most:
• Chakrasana (wheel pose)
• Matsyendrasana (spinal twist)
• Bhujangasana (cobra pose)
• Dhanurasana (bow pose)
Activating the thyroid gland - the
thyroid is a gland that secretes a hormone that is responsible for
regulating the metabolism. A high metabolism burns fat faster and more
effectively and this only happens when the thyroid is active. When you
suffer from an inactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), you are very likely to
be overweight.
The Yoga postures most likely to help an under-active thyroid are the following:
• Sarvangasana (shoulder stand)
• Matsyasana (fish pose)
Creating the perfect pH balance -
creating the perfect pH balance can also be described as alkalizing the
body when it has too much acid or has a low pH. When the body happens to
be in this condition, it fights back by storing more fat. Too much fat
obstructs veins and arteries and this interferes with the flow of blood
into the heart and the heart is forced to work extra hard to uphold
blood circulation. The end result of all this is usually a heart attack
or arteriosclerosis.
The appropriate yoga postures that help this condition are the following:
• Janushirasana (head to knee pose)
• Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend)
Cleansing the colon -
colons specialists believe that everybody has food matter lodged in
their colons. The most obvious consequence of this is bloating which can
at time be severe. Yoga when practiced appropriately will help in
cleaning the colon safely and effectively.
Below are some of the yoga poses that will help this condition:
• Mayurasana (peacock pose)
• Nauli kriya
• Utks'epa Mudra (bellow's pose)
• Agnisara Mudra (fire pose)
These are just a few ways on how Yoga aids in safe and effective weight loss, for more, keep reading our regular posts.
Yoga is known for its integral role in relieving stress. The good
news is that it can also be used to reduce weight. The reason as to why
yoga can be used in weight reduction is because it aids in increasing
the rate of metabolism which aids in burning fat. To lose weight, you
need to practice various poses. Some of the most effective posses
include:
Crescent pose
You start this pose
with your feet together and your arms on your sides. At this position,
inhale and raise your arms over your head with your fingertips reaching
towards the ceiling. You should then exhale and bend forward from the
hips, and bring your hands to the floor. While inhaling and exhaling,
move to the lunge position. At this position, inhale and raise your arms
over your head and gaze forward. You should hold in this position for
several seconds and when tired relax and repeat again.
This pose firms the hips, thighs, and hips.
Willow pose
Just
like the crescent pose, you also start this pose with your feet
together with your arms at your sides. You should bend your knee to the
side and place the sole of the foot on the inside of the right thigh.
You should then touch your palms in front of your chest and take two
breaths. When you reach the third inhalation, you should extend your
arms up with your fingertips pointing towards the ceiling. In this pose,
you should inhale and exhale as many times as possible. For ideal
results you should repeat this pose for at least five times.
This pose plays an integral role in firming the sides of the abs.
Rocking boat
You
start this pose with your knees bent, hands on the thighs, and feet on
the floor. You then lean back for about 45 degrees by raising your feet
so that the calves are parallel to the floor and your toes pointed. You
then inhale and extend your arms and legs while keeping your legs
together. You then lower your torso such that your body forms a V shape.
You should hold in this positions for several seconds then raise your
torso and legs. You should repeat this for at least five times.
For
you to lose weight using yoga, you need to realize that you need to be
committed and ensure that you practice daily. Depending on your
commitment, you will start losing weight in a matter of a few weeks to
several months.
